"When are you interviewing the band?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several famous admirers have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a close gang. Their music videos frequently show them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The band have called into a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
