Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
